Tick-borne encephalitis What is it? The tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus
initially causes flu-like symptoms which progresses into a second
phase of fever in 10% of cases. During this phase encephalitis can
develop into paralysis or death. How is it
transmitted? From the bite of infected ticks. Where is it
present? Large parts of Europe, particularly Austria, the
Baltic States, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the Russian
Federation. It occurs mostly in the summer months in rural and
forest areas at altitudes up to 1,000 metres. Level
of risk? Within the endemic area risk increases when hiking or
camping in rural areas. Severity of symptoms increases with age.
What can I do to prevent getting it? TBE vaccine
is recommended. When hiking take precautions to avoid getting
bitten by ticks.
